Fruits in diabetes

Fruits that are high in fiber and low in sugar are the best for diabetics. Such fruits include, for instance:

1. Berries – blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries

2. Citrus – oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits

3. Apples and pears

4. Kiwis

5. Melons – cantaloupe, honeydew, watermelon

6. Peaches and plums

It is important to note that even though these fruits are low in sugar, they should still be consumed in moderation to avoid any drastic increase in blood sugar levels.
The recommended daily portion of fruits for people with diabetes is generally around 2-3 servings per day. This is about the same amount recommended for individuals without diabetes. One serving is equivalent to one medium-sized fruit or 1/2 cup of chopped fruit. For example, you can have 1 medium apple as a serving or 1/2 cup of raspberries as a serving.
However, it is important to keep in mind that different fruits have varying levels of natural sugar content and glycemic load. Therefore, it is important to work with a healthcare professional to determine an individualized meal plan that incorporates the right amount and type of fruits to help manage blood sugar levels.
